US Model 1816/1822 Musket, manufactured circa 1835 in New Haven, Connecticut. Philos & Eli Whitney Blake were the nephews of Eli Whitney Sr. and were believed to be the trustees of the Whitney Armory from 1823 until Eli Whitney Jr. coming of age in 1842. These muskets started out life as flintlocks, but with advances in technology, many of these muskets were updated to the percussion firing system, as was this one, which was more reliable. This musket shows that this conversion entailed the removal of the flash pan and frizzen from the outside of the lock, the holes filled and ground flush, a small mound-type bolster was added to the barrel and a nipple threaded in. The hammer was replaced. This process was done with many of these muskets in the years leading up to the American Civil War, but a great many were also done because of the war, when both belligerents were desperate for arms for their troops. Though this musket would have been about 36 years old at the time, it was still a great musket and much higher quality than many of the imports that would be purchased in Europe and issued stateside. The overall condition is good. Strong action. The nipple is damaged. Good bore for its age. This example has a well-used stock with an above average amount of wear. Legible markings. “1835” dated lock. “1836” barrel tang. The left side of the stock is marked “HAB”. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 42 inches. Caliber: .69 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
