Description:
17th CENTURY GERMANIC WHEELLOCK Pistol 30 Thirty Years War Colonial Antique

.64 Caliber Martial Wheelock Sidearm

Here we present an antique Germanic Wheellock Pistol made circa the 17th century. The wheellock was developed in Europe in the late 15th or early 16th century, though exactly who developed it is unknown. Leonardo da Vinci produced an early sketch of a wheellock mechanism mounted on a rifle as part of a series of military design commissioned for the Duke of Milan somewhere around 1490. Another early depiction of the wheellock was drawn by Martin Loffelholz of Nuremberg, Germany in 1505, though it shows as being used as a tinder lighter rather than a weapon.

Though these mechanical wonders were utilized by many until the advent of the flintlock in the early-1700s, they were too costly and too much of a maintenance liability for widespread adoption militarily such as the matchlock saw. Nevertheless, here we have a martial pistol in .64 caliber with an overall length of 21 inches with about a 12-1/2” barrel. The barrel has two abbreviated thin ribs near the top edges of the stock and two nearly full-length ribs flanking the engraved design and maker’s mark on top. The lock has beveled edges at the tail and some light engraved embellishments on the frizzen and spring. The stock is of fruitwood and has the large, flat, round pommel that was typical of German and Dutch guns.

This would have been made around the time of the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) as well as the period of the exploration and colonization of the Americas.
The overall condition is very good. Gray patina throughout. The action is functional. The bore is patinated and smooth. The stock has been neatly repaired just forward of the lock—this can be seen mostly clearly on the left side of the gun where there is a small V notch; the stock was spliced at this point. There is a thin repaired sliver along the left side of the forestock that is unmoving. Otherwise, the stock is solid and in good order.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 12-5/8 inches.
