The M1 carbine (formally the United States Carbine, Caliber .30, M1) is a lightweight semi-automatic carbine that was a standard firearm for the U.S. military during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The M1 carbine was produced in several variants and was widely used by paramilitary and police forces around the world, and also became a popular civilian firearm after World War II. Despite having a similar name and physical outward appearance, the M1 carbine is not a carbine version of the M1 Garand rifle. On July 1, 1925, the U.S. Army began using the current naming convention where the "M" is the designation for "Model" and the number represents the sequential development of equipment and weapons. Therefore, the "M1 carbine" was the first carbine developed under this system. M1 carbines were manufactured by several different companies and this particular example was made by Winchester in 1943. This M1 carbine was part of the "1st block" of serial numbers. This example appears to have period correct parts for a Winchester in the serial number range of 1,000,000-1,350,000. Throughout a block of serial numbers parts and components were often changed and updated. This Winchester has a high wood forestock, flat bolt, wide front swivel, oval cut butt stock hole, splatter pattern butt plate, unmarked sling well and rear flip sight with "S" on the left side. All components both metal and wood are in very good operating condition. The action is buttery smooth and solid. The wood is free of cracks or chips exhibiting a few minor pressure marks. The barrel has a bright bore and still retains strong rifling. One magazine is included. This fine Winchester M1 carbine would make a great addition to a collection or a very strong start to a new collection. Sling, oiler and one magazine are included.
