Description:
The HK45 is one of H&K’s relatively newer pistol models and succeeds the older USP 45. It is essentially a slightly scaled-up P30 pistol, rechambered from the venerable 9mm Parabellum to the legendary .45 ACP. Magazine capacity of both the standard HK45 and Tactical model is 10 rounds plus one in the chamber. While this may sound a bit light in the capacity department, the HK45 has a perfectly good reason for this. Unlike most modern polymer framed .45s such as the Glock 21, XDM-45, FN 545T, and even H&K’s older USP 45, all of which use double-stack magazines, the magazine of the HK45 is a stack-and-a-half type. In this case, the stacked nature of the rounds is not as pronounced as on the double-stack type. This permits the magazine to have a narrower body, allowing for the pistol’s grip to be slimmer. Indeed, the HK45 has perhaps the best grip of any .45 in the modern age. The pistol simply meshes with your hand and feels as if it doesn’t belong anywhere else. By comparison, those double stack pistols generally require large hands or a two-handed grip to feel comfortable. Another improvement on the USP 45 is the incorporation of a MIL-STD picatinny rail on the underside of the dust cover. The older USP design sports a proprietary rail that H&K designed at a time before the picatinny rail became standard on modern pistols. Like the USP 45 Tactical V1, the HK45 Tactical V1 has a left-side mounted (i.e., right-hand-operated) thumb safety which also functions as a de-cocking lever. The “V” in “V1” represents the term “Version” while the number is self-explanatory. Like the USP, the HK45 can be converted between versions simply disassembling the pistol and replacing some internal parts. This was a major selling point for the USP when it was introduced back in the early 90s. The HK45 Tactical can be converted to nine different kinds of trigger firing modes, including H&K’s enhanced double action only “LEM” (Law Enforcement Modification) mode. The HK45 Tactical has a proprietary internal recoil reduction system which utilizes a flat recoil spring in tandem with a polymer bushing sleeve to reduce the level of felt recoil, improving the control of the pistol during rapid firing. It also helps to prolong the life of the internal components of the pistol. Like the USP, the HK45 uses an “O-ring” on the barrel as a means to improve slide-to-barrel lockup. This also enhances the inherent accuracy of the pistol. The Tactical model comes out of the box with suppressor-height night sights. The threaded, 5.11-inch barrel uses a 16x1 left-hand twist. This means that to loosen and remove the thread protector, you must rotate it clockwise rather than the more usual counterclockwise as on a right-hand thread. In other words, the process is righty-loosey, lefty-tighty as opposed to the usual righty-tighty, lefty-loosey. It can be a bit off-putting at first but becomes second-nature as the user becomes more familiar with the pistol. The bore of the HK45 uses polygonal rifling for a tighter interface between the bullet and grooves, reducing the amount of gas escaping past the bullet. It also provides a longer barrel life. Total overall length of the pistol is 8.66 inches. Overall width with the safety lever/de-cocker is just over 1.5 inches. Overall height is 6.125 inches. Sight radius is a respectable 6.4375 inches. H&K pistols are well-noted for their long life and ability to operate in apocalyptic conditions. If you are looking for a superb tactical pistol in a caliber well known for its stopping power, the HK45 Tactical V1 is a fine choice. This new in box pistol comes with two 10-round magazines, one alternate backstrap, and 4 spare O-rings.
