Description:
Listed here is a singularly unique piece of American military history. This is a Johnson Type R Carbine, which was an experimental prototype developed in the late 1930s and initially labeled as the "Type R" as it introduced the rotary magazine design (R for "Rotary"). There were initially only seven prototypes developed for potential military and/or commercial sales, and this is the third (X0003). Each prototype was unique in some aspects of their design, and you will see this one features the stock, pistol grip, sights and receiver that closely resemble those later found on the Model 1941 Light Machine Gun. The stock features an M-14 style folding buttplate, and the receiver has a three-position selector switch design. Front blade style sight with a rear Lyman peep sight. The receiver is roll-stamped with the Johnson patent info, and further reads: "CAL. 30-'06. SEMI-AUTO/"JOHNSON AUTOMATICS"/MODEL OF 1940/MADE IN PROVIDENCE, R.I., U.S.A./ X0003/TYPE R CARBINE". The wood furniture on the rifle is in terrific condition, with just a couple of minor scratches but hardly any handling wear beyond that. The metal finish shows no bluing loss with a darker teflon coating style finish. The listing is further completed with a one-of-a-kind bayonet, which is another experimental Johnson example that has an 8in knife blade rather than the later spike design. It also has its original metal scabbard, both of which are in excellent condition. Comes with a 1942 dated canvas sling. Bore has pronounced rifling but some frost and freckling throughout.
