KJ Phillips, a Master Gunsmith, opened Ozark Custom Gunsmiths in late 2022 outside of Berryville, Arkansas. This has created a unique opportunity to acquire a custom 1911 pistol with a very low serial number. KJ started Ozark Custom Gunsmiths because it has always been a dream for him to design and build the finest 1911 pistols. KJ grew up in Berryville, Arkansas, and has a great appreciation for living in the Ozark Mountains (hence the company name). KJ has always had an interest in firearms since a very young age. He started his career in 2011 at Wilson Combat and then moved to Nighthawk Custom thereafter. At Nighthawk Custom, KJ had the opportunity to train with some of the most skilled gunsmiths in the world. Those gunsmiths include Bob Marvel, Richard Heinie, and Bill Laughridge. In his growth to becoming a Master Gunsmith, he always strived to learn more every day. KJ built hundreds of 1911s over the years utilizing the knowledge built from his experience working with the mentioned gunsmiths. His talent did not go unnoticed by Nighthawk Custom and KJ was tasked with creating a prototype for a new model to add to their line. Sadly, this new model was determined by Nighthawk Custom to be too costly and never went into production. This custom build containing serial number: OCG00014 is one of these 1911 custom pistols built at Ozark Custom Gunsmiths. Ozark Custom Gunsmiths took the approach to find the best frames, slides, and small parts in the USA for their custom builds. At OCG, there are no CNC machines. The pistol started with an oversized forged frame, an oversized slide, and all oversized small parts. KJ then spent over 30 hours hand-fitting every part, hand-textured slide, frame, and small parts. Many times, during the build process, KJ had to hand file rather than use a mill. Normally, some stages of a 1911 build can be done on a mill, but without the use of a mill, KJ had to hand file everything to a perfect fit.
