Description:
REVOLUTIONARY WAR AMERICAN FLINTLOCK BRASS BARREL MAPLE STOCKED OFFICER’S PISTOL CIRCA 1770’S. 13” o/a with 7” brass round cannon muzzle .45 caliber smoothbore barrel. Full length maple stock with brass mounts. Brass lock plate. All original with minor old repairs to forend wood near muzzle. Brass trigger guard with ‘Arrow” finial and distinctive open work brass side plate. Original wood rod. A pistol by the same unknown maker is featured on page 32 & 33 in of Sam Smith and Ed Bitter’s book “HISTORIC PISTOLS, THE AMERICAN MARTIAL FLINTLOCK 1760-1845” and which is now in the Smithsonian Museum. Of Pennsylvania/Kentucky form and probably made in the Philadelphia are in the mid to late 1770’s. These may have been made for a Pennsylvania militia unit during the Revolution and saw service in various campaigns as the one in the Smithsonian was found many years ago in New England. Extra nice and quite rare.
