Description:
Full stock smoothbore flintlock jaeger rifle by Bartel Bauer of Stuttgart, active from about 1705-1745 according to Volume 1 of Heer Der Neue Stockel's directory of Bavarian gunmakers from 1400-1900. Brass finish to barrel, stock furnishings, and unbridled pan. Bright finish to lockplate. Varnished walnut stock has carved relief incised lines to the forearm of stock and rococo style tendrils with floral motifs to cheek rest on the left side and around the upper tang. Markings include stylized "B*BAUER*IN*STUTTGART" to the top of the barrel. There are also stylized "B. BAUER" marks on the lockplate along with simple engravings of what appears to be a leaf above markings and wheat grains to the tail of the lockplate. Item features a notch rear sight with a missing folding leaf and a blade front sight. Also featured is a faceted brass buttplate, as well as a faceted European-style trigger guard, and a brass-tipped wood ramrod marked "146". Stock carvings were possibly painted at some point as there are some noticeable remnants of light orange residue under the varnish. Very good as refinished. Bore is dark and crusted with oxidation. The brass finish appears to have been redone at some point and markings are slightly dulled. The finish to the trigger guard shows normal wear. The rear sight is missing an adjustable folding leaf. The stock has about a 7" crack extending from the trigger guard to the rear ramrod thimble. The stock has several other small cracks extending from the buttplate and lockplate areas. Action is functional.
