Waters U.S. Model 1836 Pistol, made in 1840. This pistol would have started out life as a flintlock and had a period conversion as the new percussion technology developed. There were actually two manufacturers of these guns: Asa Waters and Robert Johnson. Combined, the production totals were 41,000 guns. This was the last U.S. martial pistol to use the flintlock system, and many consider this the best of all U.S. flint guns due to its craftsmanship and aesthetic appeal. The gun is historically significant as this was the primary issue pistol during the Mexican American War (1846-1848) and was even significantly used during the American Civil War (1861-1865), especially in this percussion converted format. This one is a commercial conversion prevalent in the Confederacy as these flintlocks were in local militias and armories in the South when the American Civil War began. This one has a commercial hammer with some modest engraving to replace the original cock, the flash pan was ground just enough to get this bolster drum installed, and the frizzen assembly was simply removed. The lock plate is roll-stamped with an eagle head above "A. WATERS/MILBURY. MS./1840" in three lines. There is a single letter “B” inspection mark also on the lock. The overall condition is good. The action is strong. The bore is patinated and smooth. The stock is solid with some superior grain structure in the top portion. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 8-1/2 inches. Caliber: .54 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
