Here we present an antique Remington Saw Handle Deringer (also known as the No. 1 Vest Pocket Pistol), made from 1865-1888. This is an example of the .22 rimfire cartridge Vest Pocket. Invented by William H. Elliot, only about 17,000 of these guns were made in total over the 23 years production run. This single shot pistol is very simple in mechanics. Place the hammer in the most rearward position and load a cartridge. The hammer also acts as the loading gate and breach block.
This would have been a very handy pistol to have stuck down in one’s vest pocket while paddle-wheeling down the Mississippi River when the poker game went awry!
The overall condition is fine. Original nickel finish. This was an early gun that was completely unmarked! The action is excellent with strong spring tension. The bore is patinated with good rifling. The rosewood grips remain in fine condition. The overall length is about 4-1/2” and it is super thin at about 5/8” at the widest part, which is the flare at the bottom of the grips!
