Attractive BALLARD Rifle with OCTAGON BARREL
Here we present an antique J.M. Marlin Ballard No. 2 Sporting Rifle in .32 Long Rimfire Caliber made circa the mid-1880s with a production run between 1876-1891 in New Haven, Connecticut. Early manufactured Marlin Ballard rifles almost never have the caliber stamped on the barrel while the post-1881 guns almost always have the caliber marked, as does this example.
The Ballard design was utilized during the Civil War and retained a following after the conflict as it was simple and rugged. Though Winchester Model 1866s and 1873s were the latest and greatest in firepower, the Ballard was the firearm of many during this period characterized by conflict and westward expansion.
This rifle features a fully octagonal barrel with standard blade front sight and semi-buckhorn rear.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. The lever has lost some tension. Bright, nicely rifled bore with some light pitting towards the breech end. Solid stock with less than average wear. Nicely hand checkered forend. Legible markings.
