Description:
General Specs: L.C. Smith, Year 1912, 12 Gauge, 7lbs 15oz, Chokes F/F, LOP 14 5/8", DAH 2 5/8", DAC 1 9/16"
Serial Number: 201975
L.C. Smith guns built before 1913 are the best of their kind, with more attention to detail, better stock inletting, and nicer engraving than the named models that came post-1913.  Pre-1913 L.C. Smith grades were labeled by numbers, ie Grade 2E, Grade 3E, Grade 4E, Grade 5E.  This gun, sn201975 made in 1912 is one of the 414 Grade 5E’s ever made, with less than 350 or so left on the planet due to loss or destruction.  If you are going to buy the best representation of one of these rare Elsies, don’t you want to know what you are buying, including all the most important specifications that help you make a well-guided decision?  How about detailed photos so you can see with your own eyes?  Vintage Firearms, Inc. provides you with the information you need to spend your money wisely, and that matters.  This Elsie shipped with 30" barrels choked F/F (use spreader loads for more open choking, or we can alter chokes in our shop within 2 weeks of purchase), weighing 7lbs. 15oz. and balanced perfectly on the hinge pin.  The bores are factory bore diameter, mirror shiny, ribs are tight, and the barrels are tight on the hinge pin and breech face like a new gun.  We safely extended the forcing cones to 1 ½” tapers (a $200 service in our shop), so this gun is ready for modern loads with soft pellets.  This chamber service significantly reduces felt recoil and improves patterns due to fewer deformed pellets. THIS IS A VFI CERTIFIED GUN WITH A 90 DAY MECHANICAL WARRANTY.  The action and forend iron have been stripped to its smallest part, Ultrasonic cleaned, each part inspected for function and integrity, lubricated, and reassembled, all in excellent working order (a $375 service in our shop).  The sculpting of these early Smith actions is elegant, and the screws are all clean and clocked.  The finely figured European walnut has been expertly restored with a hand-rubbed Truoil finish, 28 line per inch checkering freshly recut, no cracks or splits, with superb wood-to-metal fit and awesome modern shooting dimensions.  The 14 5/8” LOP butt stock terminates in a gorgeous Purdey style leather covered pad…simply elegant as well as functional.   When considering upland game, waterfowl, turkey, pigeons, or clay targets, this gun is ready for all.  Collector interest in L.C. Smith has become brisk, with prices rising and creating a great investment opportunity.  Consider what a Parker Grade 5, or BHE, would cost in this condition (over $16,000) and you realize what a bargain this is.  I consider the Grade 5 Elsie to be one of the most beautiful of the American doubles, no matter what the cost.  Just look at the detail in the dog's features, the intricate scroll and bouquet engraving throughout, and the gorgeous borders.  What a great 108-year-old Elsie!  Grade 5's don't come up for sale very often, so don't miss your opportunity!  Thanks for looking.

If you like one our guns but it needs "tweaked", let us know and we can quote you a time and price. Some enthusiasts like the guns "as found" and others want them "just so".
