Description:
This is truly a beautiful and exceptionally-clean 1957-manufacture FN / Browning SA-22 / ATD 22 semi-auto take-down rifle chambered in .22 LR. This .22 LR caliber Browning semi-auto rifle is typically known as the SA-22 or ATD-22 model. This quick take-down rifle was produced by FN Herstal in their Belgian plant for Browning, and was based on a John Browning patent. Production began in 1914 and continued through 1974 in the Belgium FN factory, at which point manufacturing was moved to Miroku's factory in Japan and the model was put back into production from 1976 until 1983. It was first exported by FN for the American market in 1956 and quickly became a popular rifle. Remington manufactured a lighter weight version under license from 1919-1935 as the Remington Model 24 and Model 241, but the Remingtons were never as popular or held in as high a regard as the Browning. This particular example is a second year production gun that is really spectacular in every way. It has the original wheel-style adjustable rear sight that is scarce and very sought-after, and the exterior of the gun is just beautiful, rating 98% plus. It is so crisp and clean from one end to the other it could pass for having been made 2 years ago rather than 66 years ago. The inside of the gun is just as bright, clean, and free form wear as the exterior. If this ATD-22 has had more than 100 or so rounds fired thru it in it's entire life I would be VERY surprised. The only signs of use or it's age are some extremely minor and tiny little handling/storage marks here and there, and one little spot of marring in the groove for optics on top of the receiver. This was likely made by a tip-off style ring that was attached and then removed at some point. The bore in this Browning is mirror-bright and pristine. There are no visible imperfections. The wood on this one is really spectacular for a Grade 1 gun, with some bright and beautiful contrasting grain and really cool figure showing on both sides of the buttstock that really set this gun apart from others. You could buy 30 of these online randomly and blindly and this would be the moist attractive gun by a mile! The action on this rifle is like-new and slick, the two halves of the gun are night and tight to each other with ZERO adjustment used thus far since leaving the factory. All of the controls are like-new and in perfect working order. This Brownign ATD-22 will still function just as reliably as the day it left the factory and shoot just as accurately as it ever did! This Browning has not even begun to be broken-in yet and still has 98% plus of it's service life still in it. This is one of the finest FN Belgian Browning SA-22 model rifles that has come through the shop in quite some time. This very handsome rifle would be a great addition to ANY .22 rimfire rifle collection or any Browning/FN focused collection, and will absolutely continue to be a superb long-term investment if cared for.
