Schaefer (also spelled "SchaefferwasL) established in 1853. His business became William R. Schaefer & Son in 1885. Schaefer was a master craftsman making only the best quality. His advertisement read “Makers of fine hammer and hammerless double-barrels to order only” and “Manufacturer only of first-class breech-loading shotguns”. In later years he was a retailer for various makes including the renowned Prussian Charles Daly. He was famous for muzzle loading target rifles and a master marksman. He imported parts and many of his guns from Europe and England. What is known is that Schaefer Guns are rare and of extremely high quality. Most of his guns had little or no engraving. Lack of serial number, Prof marks, high standing hammers, and keyed for-end suggest that it was made about 1873. Being that his shop was located near the then thriving waterfowl flyway, he mostly produced big bore guns. This gun is in outstanding original condition. It is a 14-gauge weighing only about 6 ½ pounds. The 27” fine Damascus barrels retain 99% of the original Damascus pattern. Case coloring is gone on the action body, which is clean without rust or any other blemish. But the side-plates retain most of the original case color. I believe the stock has been repaired at the head. But it is hardly detectable. The stock is highly figured English walnut with the original horn butt-plate and looks to have all the original finish. Both side-plates are marked: “Wm. R. Schaefer” and the top rib marked “Wm. R. Schaefer, Boston”. There is no serial number, and the only proof mark is what appears to be the Belgian ELG in an ovel on the barrel flats. It locks up like new and obviously only shot a few times. There are a few minor handling marks due to the gun being 150 years old. The checkering is near perfect. The bore is near perfect. SOLD Antique: Yes Shotgun Gauge: 14 Gauge Manufacturer: Wm. R.
