WORLD WAR II Era Self Defense Pistol
Here we present a Colt Model 1908 Hammerless Pistol manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut in 1939 with a production run between 1908 and 1945. This is a short-recoil, semi-automatic pistol, designed by the American arms designer John Moses Browning. Some were issued to U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force general officers during World War II. Gangsters, Law Enforcement, and everyday civilians all used these guns. In addition to lawful owners, many gangsters of the pre-World War II era favored these Colt Hammerless pistols because they were relatively small and easily concealed. Al Capone had a nickel finished one like this, and Bonnie Parker used one to break Clyde Barrow out of jail after smuggling it into the jail by taping it to her thigh. Bank robber John Dillinger was carrying this model of pistol when he was shot by FBI agents outside the Biograph theater on July 22, 1934.
Despite the title "hammerless", the Model 1908 does have a hammer. The hammer is covered and hidden from view under the rear of the slide. This allows the pistol to be carried in and withdrawn from a pocket quickly and smoothly without snagging. Approximately 570,000 Colt Pocket Hammerless pistols were produced from 1903 to 1945, in five different types.
The overall condition is near fine. Refinished in nickel. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The grips how show use and remain solid. A handsome piece!
