.38 Caliber Full-Stock Pioneer Rifle
Here we present an antique T. Hughes Long Rifle, made circa the mid-1800s with an R.W. Booth of Cincinnati lock. Per J.B. Whisker, Thomas Hughes was born in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania in 1789. His father immigrated to the colonies circa 1760 from North Ireland. Thomas was listed as a gunsmith there in 1808 and 1809. From there he moved to Jefferson Twp in Green County in 1810, then to Uniontown in 1813 and 1814 before settling in Wheeling, Virginia (it would become West Virginia in 1863) in 1817, where he spent the rest of his life (1849). In addition to making guns, he was a lumber man, involved in steamboating, founded the Wheeling Savings institution, and was city treasurer. When he died the business passed to his son, Thomas Hughes, Jr.
Wheeling was a Gateway to the West due to its position on the Ohio River, especially when steamboat technology was developed, which made travel and trade possible to Cincinnati, Ohio, Louisville, Kentucky, Evansville, Indiana, Paducah, Kentucky, St. Louis, Missouri (the other Gateway to the West), and beyond! As such, it was a key place to buy a gun and other supplies if one was heading to the further frontier. It is interesting to note that this Virginian rifle was built with a Cincinnati lock by R.W. Booth, illustrating the trade that was happening between the two towns.
This rifle features a full-length tiger stripe maple stock with nice figure. The octagonal barrel is marked “T. HUGHES” on the top flat just to the side of the rear sight. The lock is marked “R.W. BOOTH & CO/CINCINNATI”. The barrel is about 40 ½” and in .38 caliber. Double set triggers.
The overall condition is very good. Original finish/patina. The tang screw is absent but the barrel is held fast by the pins that secure it to the stock along the length. The action is excellent. Set trigger must be set first. The bore is in good condition with strong rifling. The stock is solid throughout and has great striped grain structure. It is decorated with a crescent moon in German silver on the left stock. A very handsome gun from Wheeling!
