Description: The HK45C is one of H&K’s relatively newer pistol models and succeeds the older USP 45 Compact. The HK45C is the compact version of the HK45, but unlike that pistol, the grip of the pistol is based not on the P30, but upon the older H&K P2000. An interesting fact about the HK45C Tactical is that it does not directly replace any pistol in the USP line. While the full-size HK45 replaces the USP and the HK45C replaces the USP 45 Compact, there was no USP 45 Compact Tactical model. Instead, the HK45C Tactical was developed to fill a U.S. Special Operations requirement. In USSOCOM service, the pistol is known as the Mk 24, and should not be confused with its bigger, older cousin the Mark 23, a pistol related to the USP. Magazine capacity of both the standard HK45C and Tactical model is 8 rounds plus one in the chamber. An extended magazine will hold 10 rounds. While this may sound a bit light in the capacity department, both the HK45 and HK45C have a perfectly good reason for this. Unlike most modern polymer framed .45s such as the Glock 21, XDM-45, FN 545T, and even H&K’s older USP 45, all of which use double-stack magazines, the magazine of the HK45 is a stack-and-a-half type. In this case, the stacked nature of the rounds is not as pronounced as on the double-stack type. This permits the magazine to have a narrower body, allowing for the pistol’s grip to be slimmer. Indeed, the HK45 has perhaps the best grip of any .45 in the modern age. The pistol simply meshes with your hand and feels as if it doesn’t belong anywhere else. By comparison, those double stack pistols generally require large hands or a two-handed grip to feel comfortable. Another improvement on the USP 45 Compact is the incorporation of a MIL-STD picatinny rail on the underside of the dust cover. The older USP design sports a proprietary rail that H&K designed at a time before the picatinny rail became standard on modern pistols. Like the USP, any HK45 model can be converted between versions simply disassembling the pistol and replacing some internal parts. This was a major selling point for the USP when it was introduced back in the early 90s. The HK45C Tactical can be converted to nine different kinds of trigger firing modes, including H&K’s enhanced double action only “LEM” (Law Enforcement Modification) mode. The example shown here is 81000024, the HK45C Tactical V7. Like the full size HK45 Tactical V7, the HK45C Tactical V7 has no manual safety and uses H&K’s patented Law Enforcement Modification (LEM) trigger system. The “V” in “V7” represents the term “Version” while the number is self-explanatory. The LEM trigger operates similar to a Double-Action Only trigger system. However, there are slight differences. Under the LEM system, the hammer will always return to the DA position (i.e., forward) after each shot is fired. Pulling the trigger gives a feeling similar to pulling the trigger on a DA/SA pistol with the hammer already in the cocked position – there is a bit of take-up, and then the trigger hits the break point. However, unlike the DA/SA pistol, the hammer of the LEM system moves rearward as the trigger is pulled, just like a standard DAO pistol. The difference is simply in how easy it is to pull the trigger. As stated in the manual, the LEM system will ALWAYS be activated via the slide passing over the hammer. The only time that the HK45C will operate in the traditional DAO mode is when the slide does not recoil out of battery as a result of either a weak primer strike and/or a failure for the cartridge to ignite. The HK45C Tactical has a proprietary internal recoil reduction system which utilizes a flat recoil spring in tandem with a polymer bushing sleeve to reduce the level of felt recoil, improving the control of the pistol during rapid firing. It also helps to prolong the life of the internal components of the pistol. Like the USP, the HK45 and its variants use an “O-ring” on the barrel as a means to improve slide-to-barrel lockup. This also enhances the inherent accuracy of the pistol. The Tactical model comes out of the box with suppressor-height night sights. The threaded, 4.57-inch barrel uses a 16x1 left-hand twist. This means that to loosen and remove the thread protector, you must rotate it clockwise rather than the more usual counterclockwise as on a right-hand thread. In other words, the process is righty-loosey, lefty-tighty as opposed to the usual righty-tighty, lefty-loosey. It can be a bit off-putting at first but becomes second-nature as the user becomes more familiar with the pistol. The bore of the HK45 uses polygonal rifling for a tighter interface between the bullet and grooves, reducing the amount of gas escaping past the bullet. It also provides a longer barrel life. Total overall length of the pistol is 7.87 inches. Overall width with the safety lever/de-cocker is just over 1.5 inches. Overall height is 6.125 inches with the extended 10-round magazine. Sight radius is a respectable 5.875 inches. H&K pistols are well-noted for their long life and ability to operate in apocalyptic conditions. If you are looking for a superb tactical pistol in a caliber well known for its stopping power, the HK45C Tactical V7 is a fine choice. This new in box pistol comes with two extended 10-round magazines, one alternate backstrap, and 4 spare O-rings.
