Description:
CONFEDERATE “Q” Marked CIVIL WAR Antique O.P. DRISSEN Co. Light MINIE RIFLE

Placed in the CONFEDERATE CLEANING & REPAIR System

Here we present an antique O.P. Drissen & Company Light Minie Rifle with its saber bayonet manufacture circa 1861 in Liege, Belgium. This gun was also known as the “Brazilian Contract Light Minie Rifle” and the “Brazilian Model 1855 Naval Rifle” and imported into New York in 1861 for the American Civil War. This gun is one of the most attractive, well balanced, and accurate of the percussion rifles used during the war. It was a unique combination of the features found on the British Pattern 1856/58/60 series of Enfield Short Rifles and the French Light Minie rifle.

This is a nice example of a U.S. gun that was captured or collected by the Confederate States Ordnance teams (or civilians) and placed into the Confederate cleaning and repair (“C&R”) system for reissue to Confederate troops. Between 200,000 and 250,000 firearms were turned in for refurbishing at either Danville, Staunton, Lynchburg, or Richmond. This rifle bears a Confederate States final inspector’s stamp “Q” just forward of the trigger guard tang. The identity of the individual inspector is unknown. Theories state the letter may be a real initial or possibly an assigned letter. In any case, the number and variety of guns bearing this mark point to someone working at the Richmond Arsenal/Artillery Workshop. This is a nice Civil War rifle that no doubt saw service in the field during the war, and at some point changed hands amount combatants, moving from a New Yorker into the hands of a lucky Confederate soldier!

It is estimated that the U.S. Government purchased between 4,000 and 6,000 of these rifles. On the Civil War Union purchasing agents records these guns are referred to as “Belgian rifles of Enfield pattern” or “Rifles, Liege, saber bayonet, caliber .577”. The source was the form of C.K. Garrison who had a U.S. Government contract to deliver 5,800 "Minie Rifles of Liege pattern with saber bayonets”. The “Brazilian Light Minie Rifle” was part of a contract destined for the Brazilian military but ended up being sold to the U.S. buyers instead. There are many known Civil War images of troops armed with these rifles. The brass U.S. Eagle wrist shields on the guns are clearly visible in the images and the straight blade saber bayonets are generally shown suspended from the U.S. M-1855 rifleman’s belt.

The overall condition is good. Gray patina throughout. The rear sight assembly is absent. The action is excellent. The bore is patinated with thin rifling. The stock bears the distinctive “Q” marking forward of the trigger guard. Makers marks visible throughout. The top of the stock has a federal eagle shield emblem fastened. The stock has a stable split across the rear lock screw on the left stock flat, otherwise solid. The bayonet is maker marked “S&K” and is in good shape though weathered. The blade is straight. The tip is a bit rounded. A really neat and obscure arm that was procured by the Union government and subsequently picked up or captured by the CSA!
