Description:
Meriden Firearms was founded in 1905 with a vision of making the highest-quality double shotgun at a cost that would appeal to America’s expanding middle class.   The original owner of this gun, which was made in 1906, would have received a 60-day free trial and a 20-year guarantee covering any defects in material or workmanship: a real testament to its quality.   The strengths of the A.J. Aubrey and other Meriden Firearms shotguns is described in “Early 20th Century Affordable American Doubles,” which appeared in the Sep/Oct 2021 issue of Sporting Classics and in which this particular gun, s/n 5779, is featured.

This gun’s stock is made of nicely grained European walnut.  The drop at the comb is 1-1/2 inches and at the heel 2-7/8 inches.  The length-of-pull to the end of the original buttplate is 14 inches.  The cast is neutral.  The receiver and sidelocks retain significant original case color.  The locks and other mechanical parts have been fully serviced.  The mechanical features include traditional V-spring powered sidelocks similar to those of an LC Smith, an robust safety mechanism, and cocking indicators.  The 30-inch barrels are made of fluid steel and have 2-3/4-inch chambers.  The right barrel is choked skeet (.005) and the left improved cylinder (.010).  The bores of both barrels measured at 9 inches from the breech are .718 inches, and the outside diameters of the barrels at the muzzle are both .830 inches.  The wall thicknesses of the right barrel measured at 9 inches from the muzzle are (top/side/bottom) .044/.040/.042, and at the middle of the barrel are .046/.042/.043.   The wall thicknesses of the left barrel are .040/.040/.042 and .045/.043/.040, respectively.  The triggers pull at 7 ½ to 8 pounds.  The gun weighs 7 pounds 13 ounces.  It locks up tightly and is on-face.  All serial numbers match.

The price does not include shipping cost, which is paid by buyer. The inspection period is 7 days from receipt.  The gun has been fired using standard factory 2-3/4” target loads.  However, as for any antique or vintage shotgun, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by his or her gunsmith before firing.
