Description:
San Antonio Police Department marked Smith & Wesson Model 58 double and single action revolver chambered in .41 Magnum. Commissioned from the Smith & Wesson factory in 1974, it is one of 387 Model 58 revolvers (out of 400 shipped) accepted by the police department of San Antonio, Texas (SAPD). The intent of the purchase was to arm police officers with a more powerful cartridge than the current anemic .38 Special currently in use. Because the "magnum" cartridges had gotten a bad reputation with the public based on reports of overpenetration, the request was made to Smith & Wesson to mark the revolvers without the word. SAPD budget constraints prevented every revolver produced in the shipment from being marked, except this particular piece. The right side of the barrel is factory stamped ".41 KEITH" in honor of the creator of the .41 magnum cartridge, Elmer Keith. After being received by the department, the revolver was hand stamped with "SAPD" on the frame forward of the trigger guard. Comes with factory and previous owner letters detailing the history of this truly one-of-a-kind piece of history. .41 Remington Magnum
