Description:
ENGRAVED Antique AUGUSTE FRANCOTTE Boxlock Percussion Pistol w/SNAP BAYONET

Mid-1800s BELGIAN Self Defense Pocket / Muff Pistol

Here we present an antique Engraved Auguste Francotte Boxlock Percussion Pistol with a Snap Bayonet, made circa the late 1850s to early 1860s in Liege, Belgium. Founded in Liege in 1810, the Francotte company established itself there, but it wasn’t until 1860 that the company became especially active. The company was one of the principal manufactures of weapons coming out of Liege from 1860 until 1914, when its activities were blocked by German Occupation.

By 1890, Auguste Francotte sported no less than 150 different revolvers. He also over the years produced licensed copies of Adams, Tranter, and Smith & Wesson revolvers. The Francotte company was also an important wholesaler, especially in the early 1880s, providing revolvers to wholesale houses in the United States, such as Sears & Roebuck and Montgomery Ward who would put their trade name on them. Only by disassembling the revolvers would one find the initials “AF” on the internal components.

This little self-defense pistol would have been most at home in the pocket of anyone in the busy cities of Europe during the mid-1800s. This pistol is small, light and simple.

The overall condition is very good. Original finish. The action is excellent. The bore is in nice condition with sharp micro-groove rifling. The grip is solid. The bayonet has good spring tension but the point is chipped and therefore too short to be retained against the front of the trigger guard as intended.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 4-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .50 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
