Description:
VERY FINE SHARPS 1853 SLANT BREECH OCTAGON SPORTER IN RARE .52 CALIBER WITH DOUBLE SET TRIGGERS. Made from 1854-1859 in .38, .44 and .52 calibers. Of the 2,025 1853 sporting rifle manufactured, only 295 were octagon rifles in .52 caliber. Having double set triggers reduces the number made like this one. Serial numbers ran from 8000 -27500. This one is in the 17XXX range. No doubt it is of a later manufacture as it is fitted with the Lawrence ladder rear sight with slide intact. The 26" barrel is fairly heavy measuring about an inch across the flats at the muzzle. These large caliber percussion sporters were popular in the West and the early Sharps catalogues show a number of letters from Western hunters of the 1850s extolling the virtues of the Sharps breech loaders for hunting and protection. This example shows fine barrel blue that is evenly darkening and mixing a little plum. The barrel shows crisp Sharps Hartford address markings. The front sight is the original small blade. The receiver is an uncleaned dark brown with excellent correct markings and matching serial numbers on the receiver, barrel, forend, butt plate and patch box. The wood is particularly excellent with tight wood to metal fit and no chipping or cracking. The forend has the correct  found pewter tip and the barrel has the correct "collar" at the receiver juncture. The brass butt plate and patchbox have an attractive mellow unpolished, uncleaned patina. The double set triggers with adjustment screw work correctly. Exc. screw heads. The bore is bright with some scattered surface dark spots that may brush out. Fine rifleing throughout. Overall, a great appearance and Western flavor to this one. Very hard to find in this big caliber.
