The barrel has a gray patina with moderate pitting in the bolster area and partially visible proof marks. The replaced breech plug is dated 1838. The lock and hammer are brown with surface roughness. The lock has the eagle over US at the center and SPRING/FIELD/1848 at the tail. The triggerguard, butt plate, and bands are brown with surface roughness. The stock is good with a chip forward of the rear band on the right at the barrel. The wood behind the bolster has been been burned away from firing. The right butt has ""BULL RUN/1861"" lightly carved into it. The left side has a cartouche on the flat and ""HIT"" crudely carved into the left butt. The action functions correctly. This musket has ""that look"". We have sold numerous inscribed Civil War guns and this gun is typical of those and we believe this to be a genuine inscription. If only it could talk!
