Description:
Pair of CASED Antique Revolvers; E. REMINGTON & C.S. SHATTUCK Spur Triggers

Remington’s Smallest Ever Revolver & SCARCE SHATTUCK

Here we present a pair of antique Spur Trigger Revolvers. The first is an E. Remington & Sons “Iroquois” Pocket Revolver, Remington’s smallest revolver ever made, made circa 1880 in Ilion, New York. Rival companies such as Colt, Marlin, Forehand & Wadsworth, Hopkins & Allen, and Smith & Wesson, were having great success with their cartridge firearms. In 1879, E. Remington & Sons introduced the “Iroquois” Revolver to the general public. It was a nickel plated, single action 7-shot revolver that fired .22 Long rimfire ammunition. The revolver weighs only about 7-1/2 ounces, is only about 5-1/2 inches long, and has a 2-1/4” long barrel with a spur trigger.

The second is a C. S. Shattuck Swing Out Pocket Revolver, made circa the 1880s in Hatfield, Massachusetts. This little revolver has a front blade sight and a notch rear sight. The left side of the barrel reads “C.S. Shattuck Hatfield, Mass”. The left side of the casehardened frame reads “Pat Nov 4, 1879”. The hard rubber grips are monogrammed and have President Lincoln and President Garfield on them. According to Flayderman, “There is an estimate of a few thousand total production” of this revolver.

These pocket-sized revolvers and many like them were made by various companies such that the price easily undercut better known and established companies like Colt. As a result, many of Colt’s similar lines were shut down for their inability to compete. During a time when many, if not most people carried a firearm, these affordable little revolvers were small enough to conceal and carry, yet provide some level of protection or peace of mind, even when the town did not allow firearms within its limits.

Though these revolvers were manufactured around 70 years prior to the term “Suicide Special”, these style revolvers are commonly referred to as such. It was not until 1948 that the term “Suicide Special” was coined and proliferated by Duncan McConnel in his article for the NRA’s American Rifleman. 10 years later in 1958 Donald Blake Webster published his book about them, Suicide Specials. There were quite literally dozens of companies making these at the end of the 19th century, curiously being “trade named” all sorts of things, for example: Defender, Blue Jacket, Red Jacket, Electric, Smoker and many more! They are typically rimfire and have the spur trigger, much like their progenitor the S&W No. 1 Revolver. Though they do not have the name recognition of Colt’s, Smith & Wesson, they still represent a period in American history and present an opportunity for collectors with relatively minimal investment.

The overall condition is good. Both bores are bright but contain spots of pitting. Original finish has been preserved on both revolvers. Legible markings. The action on the Shattuck is strong, while the Remington Iroquois does not function and the cylinder does not lock up. Solid grips on both guns, light handling wear is present. The case is in good shape and has an open spot to continue the collection!
