This is a ‘’Combat Captured Rifle & Bayonet Set’’ being sold exactly as it came from the WWII Veteran and you will receive everything as we have, including the information regarding the WWII that brought the rifle and bayonet back after the war. NOTE: We have not cleaned any items so you will receive everything exactly as we have. Sitting here before us, is as follows: Captured after the long winter of 1944/45 and as stated, we have NOT cleaned or oiled anything and as such it is a bit dirty and in need of a good cleaning and TLC as it was stored for years. A starting bit of this variations History: This Rifle with its ‘’byf 44’’ marked front receiver ring represents a K-98 that was manufactured by the famous MAUSER-WERKE, OBERNDORF Factory, in mid 1944 and as far as quality of manufacture goes The Mauser, Oberndorf Factory quality and workmanship was the absolute best thru out the War. With its ‘’32---f (5 digit) serial number it shows to have been manufactured in the earlier part of 1944 as the known numbered blocks went from 3342 (4 digit no letter) to 11328n (5 digit and ‘’n’’ block) and total known 1944 manufacture was 1,411,314. Reference Book: Please refer to the Reference Book by Richard D. Law ‘‘Backbone of the Wehrmacht, The GERMAN K-98k Rifle, 1934-1945’’. See the chapter ‘’The Late-War Years (1944-1945) Pages 201 thru 215 on the 1944 K-98 rifles. See especially page 206 on this exact ‘’byf 44’’ variation. This book Lists this variation and shows a good picture of the top front receiver ring on page 206. *Matching/ Originality: This is a good representative example of a ‘’Vet’’ Captured/Bring Back Rifle and the Rifles metal itself remains ALL MATCHING in Serial Numbers thru-out right down to the firing pin! As far as the metal parts none ever appear to have been replaced or mixed with another Rifle! With its’’32---f’’ Serial Number it shows to have been of earlier-1944 manufacture, so it has both earlier and later features. Finish % and Proofs/Markings: This Rifles original (Un-Cleaned/’’as is’’) Mauser Factory finish at present rates appx 90% overall and appx 95% on receiver, appx 95% on bolt with some moisture/weather etching/pitting on bolt handle and a bit on extractor. The rear barrel/rear sight assembly rates appx 90% with again some more but minor moisture/weather places, trigger housing is correctly the later un-numbered stamped ‘’byf’’ marked variation rating appx.95%, floor plate is also correctly theb stamped un-numbered variation also ‘’byf’’ marked rating appx 85% (this is the ‘’balance’’ point of the rifle when carrying and always shows wear), center band is correctly the stamped un-numbered variation rating appx 70%, band spring appx 95%, front band is correctly the stamped un-numbered variation rating appx 75% with also some moisture/weather etching, exposed barrel, front sight and original front sight hood rates appx 85% with some moisture/weather etching under barrel directly under cleaning rod area, exposed bayonet lug shows typical expected aging and browning, butt plate shows expected age and minor staining. Due to rifles earlier/mid 1944 manufacture all metal is of the earlier ‘’blued’’ finish! Again, nothing cleaned or oiled so no doubt better once cleaned, oiled and a bit of simple TLC! Note: All Proofs, markings and stampings remain as 1944 Mauser Factory perfect! Bore: The BORE was very dirty from sitting all these many years and all we have done was run a patch through it and at present rates easily VG with deep rifling and simply evidence of WWII corrosive ammo but should clean a bit better. Action/Mechanical: As with all else in need of a good cleaning and oiling still rates as Excellent and has the typical superb Mauser, Oberndorf quality. Wood set: We did not remove the stock from the Rifle so as not to damage screws or etc. Basically, the laminated wood set is of later stained variation with a darker reddish blond coloring. Both stock and hand guard are closely matching in color with a nice fit. The only thing that has been done to the stock is that the original ‘’Vet’’ at some point after bringing the rifle home, has drilled and filled 4 small holes (2 in lower firearm and 2 on the lower butt stock). It appears (?) that he was going to install a sling attachment set, However, there are only the small holes he nicely plugged but as there are no marks from a sling base it clearly shows they were never installed. Again, these holes were small and can be left alone or if desired with just a bit of a more skilled hand the wood can be easily bettered but even left alone it is barely noticeable, quite acceptable and simply part of Rifles History. Again, the holes are small and at first glance they simply appear as minor small dings. Accessories: As stated this Historic Nazi WWII K98k rifle comes totally complete with its original untouched VG Nazi Leather sling, original front sight hood, cleaning rod and bayonet. Bayonet/Scabbard: This bayonet set was brought back with rifle and goes with it. Seeing combat use, it rates overall about G/VG showing moisture/weather etching/pitting in places. The bayonet is marked with the (non-matching) SN on the blade and ‘’Tr’’ on the right side by the hilt. The scabbard is also nonmatching numbers. No leather, only the bayonet set. WWII Veteran's Information: Information received with this most Historical Nazi WWII K98k Rifle is: ‘’Veteran’’, Iva Lawhon from ST Joseph, Mo who served in an Armored Ordnance unit during WWII. He Captured it and Brought it Back at the end of the War. This information came directly from a very dear and close friend of our family, so we feel it is quite credible. General History/Use: This Mauser-Werke, Oberbdorf ‘’byf 44’’ K-98 was manufactured in earlier/mid-1944 and as such it is quite a Historical Rifle as it was in combat service/use before or during the Normandy/D-Day landingsperiod through the Battle of the Bulge seeing much and drastic weather changes, hot summer, rain, very cold and much snowy weather service from then on till Captured by the ‘’Vet’’ and brought home with him. Knowing all of this it is amazing that it remains in any way near this condition. These earlier-mid War 1944 K-98s are some of the most Historical desirable variations due to the amount of daily actual combat they have witnessed let alone one with this outstandingly ALL MATCHING and untouched metal that remains in its condition/originality. A great opportunity and if you like actual ‘’I was there’’ History, in an actual ‘’Vet’’ bring back item complete with the actual name of the soldier who Captured it and brought it home with him this is it. With all of this going for it, the Provenance and the Great Pricing it deserves very careful consideration and a little bit of TLC. Curio &Relic FFL Item SOLD Manufacturer: Mauser Model: K98 |
