Description:
This is a nice, handsome, antique Colt Model 1861 Navy single-action revolver chambered in .36 caliber cap and ball, made in the first year of production in 1861 during the American Civil War.  It was VERY likely used in the Civil War as almost all of these '61 Navy models that were made in 1861 and 1862 were.  It was probably carried thru a lot of the country where the battles were taking place, and it was likely used in actual combat with one side or the other.  There is no telling how many battles it could have participated in, as there were countless skimishes, numerous small unit fights, and quite a few all-out major battles that took place in the last 4 years of the war.
This Colt '61 Navy is a 100% all-matching gun, and it would also be a 100% original example if not for just two deductions.  The first deductions come from a few screws in this Colt that look factory screws, but also look newer than the others.  The other deduction comes from the factory 1-piece grips on this pistol.  They are no doubt the factory originals to this gun, but they appear to have been touched-up in spots, and then given a coat of wood finish and varnish at some point in the last 20 years or so.  The rest of the gun is totally uniform in both the degree of wear it shows and the overall patina, which is very even and attractive.   As mentioned earlier, all of the serial-numbered parts match on this gun, and they appear to all be factory original except for perhaps one, the barrel wedge.   You will notice that the wedge shows some faint partial numbers under the stamped serial number that matches the rest of this gun.  We have been told this is pretty common for military guns in service at this time.  The barrel wedge was the most commonly lost part of the all of the Colt revolvers being used in the war.  When someone lost their wedge they had to have a replacement wedge fit either in the field by an armorer, at one of the military armories or depots, or even at the Colt factory.  These replacement wedges were often re-numbered / numbered to the gun after it was properly fit.  If the wedge was salvaged from an unservicable or partially destroyed revolver, not much care was taken in removing the serial number of the gun it was taken from.
This Colt 1861 Navy is also in perfect working order.  The action is smooth, precise, and perfectly in-time no matter how fast or slow it is cocked.  Both the half-cock AND full-cock notches are intact on the hammer, and the trigger will only drop the hammer from full-cock, as it is supossed to. The loading lever is in good working order and is not all sloppy like most you will encounter, and it locks up under the barrel nicely and will not fall unless you pull back the latch at the end. All the parts of this revolver fit together nice and tight with no slop in it.  If you have been looking for a really-nice original Civil War-production Colt 1861 Navy that has a lot of charachter and looks like it was definitely in battle, this is it!!  This pistol most definitely did not spend the last 4 years of the war in some rear-ecshelon officer's desk drawer, and it is priced to sell.
