SITES .38 c1840s Antique WESTWARD EXPANSION Mid-1800s HALF STOCK Long Rifle Here we present an antique J. Sites Half Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century in Arrow Rock, Missouri. John Sites, Sr., was a German immigrant who moved to Boonville, Missouri in 1834 where he owned and operated a gunsmith shop. His son, John Sites, Jr. opened a gunsmith shop very close to his father’s shop in Arrow Rock, Missouri in 1844. At the time, Arrow Rock was an important waypoint on the Santa Fe trail, and was poised to serve the same purpose on the Oregon and California trails. Sites guns have been found in several western locations, including California, Oregon, Montana, and New Mexico. John Sites Jr.’s home and gunshop are still in Arrow Rock and are recognized as “Historical Sites” in this small town nestled in central Missouri right on the Missouri River. John Sites Jr. was born in 1821 and died in 1904. After the American Civil War, he was more of a gunsmith and retailer than a gunmaker. Its stout octagonal barrel is in .38 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many makers’ names of the so-called Kentucky long rifles have been lost over time. The overall condition is very good. Original patina. The action is excellent. Set trigger to be set prior to cocking the hammer. The bore is in good condition with good rifling. The stock is solid. Nice German silver hardware to include the crescent butt plate, trigger guard, side plate, and eagle mount on the left cheek piece. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 30-1/4 inches. Caliber: .38 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
