Description:
The Model 1877 was Colt's first attempt to produce a double-action revolver and it shows a striking resemblance to its' Single Action Army' cousin. This revolver is chambered in .41 caliber with a 3 1/2" barrel and was nicknamed the "Thunderer" by Ben Kittredge, a famous entrepreneur, salesman, and news writer of the time. The nickname stuck and Colt used it in its' advertising to go on and produce over 166,000 of them between 1877 and 1909. The "Thunderer" was the weapon of choice of Billy the Kid, while Doc Holiday and John Wesley Hardin carried Thunderer's from time to time as backups to their primary revolvers. This particular example was manufactured around 1888-90. It has a mottled nickel plated patina on its' case-hardened metal barrel and frame and features gutta-percha (hard rubber) grips. It is in an ugly, but tight condition for its' age and is fully functional and has been previously fired by the current owner.
She was rode hard and put up wet. The frame shows wear; the barrel has a clean bore and shows very good rifiling; the cylinder is goo0d and the cartridge chambers show a little evidence of wear, and it cycles properly with the trigger pull action.
