Description:
** 11/24/23 SOLD **
For sale is a beautiful, true BEST quality English double!  This James Woodward 'The Automatic' sidelock boasts beautiful full coverage engraving, deep carved fences, cocking indicators and stunning, original wood. 'The Automatic' was the first Woodward designed with self cocking hammers - originally in 1880.  This second-generation hammerless sidelock was built in 1881 - they got rid of the exposed hammers but kept the 'The Automatic' name.

The action is void of a common top lever as the barrels are opened using a forward underlever.  Once you try this a few times you will appreciate how ergonomic this design is.

Rolled edge trigger guard; Bar action sidelocks with bolstered tumbler pivots and Gold lined cocking indicators; Locks cocked by the combined action of lever and barrels; Interceptor sears operated by the safety slide; Underlever opening, operating a double bite 'Purdey Bolt''Anson' forend catch; ; Arcaded, clipped fences. Engraving style Very best foliate scroll with floral detail. Very probably engraved by Kell or Sumner. Woodward "T" style safety slide with gold inlaid 'SAFE'. Top rib and top tang gold inlaid with engraved '1'.  The top rib is of the smooth, concave game type. The stock is beautifully well figured walnut and is lightly cast off for a right-handed shot, features well-defined drop points, a vacant metal oval . The forend has a finely engraved steel tip. The stock is finished with a traditional linseed oil-based preparation as used on best guns by one of the top English makers.  Overall the condition of this fine double is very good.  The barrels have been sleeved which makes this a reliable and safe shotgun to shoot.

Original rib remains and reads: "The Automatic"  James Woodward & Sons, 64 St James's Street, London SW
