Description:
Made by Richardson & Overman with a total quality of about 17,728 carbines made, the Gallager Carbine saw extensive use in the American Civil War.  The Gallager Carbine is recognized by collectors today thru three separate models, the first being early production percussion carbines with a different lockplate marking, the second model was also a percussion model but with a redesigned lockplate marking, and the "final model" , which was chambered for the .56-52 Spencer cartridge and used a firing pin device instead of a percussion cap design as well as an integral extractor.  There were only about 5,000 of these last models made.  Often observed with a blued frame instead of case colored, these last guns were contracted on March 1865 and delivered in May of 1865.  At least 2500 of these 5000 were sold in 1870 as surplus and eventually bought for the Franco Prussian War.  This particular example is serial number 19819, which is very close to the serial block assigned to Company A of the 4th Tennessee Mounted Infantry.  Whether it was one of these is impossible to know due to incomplete records at the Springfield Research Service.   As you can see from the pictures provided the condition of this Gallager is very good overall.  The metal all shows a nice evenly worn and aged patina but with no major damage or defects.  It shows that it was issued and used but not abused.   All of the factory markings are still legible and complete, including even two very nice original cartouches on the left side of the stock which consists of a a boxed "ALN" and a rounded rectangle with the initials "WHB". We are currently tracking down who whose inspectors would be at this point.  The right side of the of receiver is stamped with "Gallager's Patent July 17th 1860" at the rear of the action, "Manufact'd By Richardson & Overman PhilaD" behind the hammer, and the serial number "19819" below that.  The top of the barrel is stamped with a factory firing proof of the initials "JMD".  The action is in perfect working order, locking up tight with no lever droop and a tight latch.  The hammer still has both half and full-cock notches intact and the firing pin moves freely as designed.  The original buttstock is in great shape overall without any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage.  The worst of the marks in the wood are on the keel of the buttstock.  All of the original stock hardware is still intact, tight, and in good shape, including the factory patchbox which closes and opens properly with proper spring tension.  The factory sling ring bar and ring are in great shape.  The flip-up rear sight is in good shape and has aiming points from 100 to 300 to 500 yards when flipped up.  The front sight is still centered and in good shape.  The bore of this "final model" Gallager is average to good.  There is strong and well-defined rifling throughout the barrel with lots of shiny areas with no pitting mixed with some scattered spots of average pitting that would not prevent the carbine from being fired accurately.  We have no doubt that with the proper ammunition this Gallager would still function superbly.  If you have been looking for one of these hard to find non-percussion "Final Models"  here is your chance to get one of the best we have seen in years.   As an antique, this can be shipped directly to your home, no FFL needed.
