Description: Up for sale we have what I believe is a custom order Manton & Sons Side By Side Muzzle Loaded 10 Gauge Percussion Shotgun. This is a shotgun is marked as being manufactured as a special order for James Adger who became one of the wealthiest and most influential merchants of antebellum Charleston, and he used his position to good effect in the affairs of the city. The engraving on the rib is faint but still legible. I believe this shotgun was made by Manton & Sons but am not certain on the manufacturer. It is marked "London" on both side plates but I haven't disassembled it to see proof marks or inspected the flats. Since that company was known for producing high-end special order shotguns for hunting and shooting marketed to the richest of the rich prior to the civil war it seems to be a good fit. The shotgun is intricately designed with silver inlays and the shotgun is actually engraved on the rib " Manufactured for J. Adgers Charleston SC". Overall this shotgun is in good condition maintaining most of its original finish. This was a special order so the receiver is specially engraved and there are what look to be silver inlays in the barrel at a few different points. The stock itself is very ornate as well and in great condition. The barrels are 29 inches long and have the original bead. The length of pull is 14 1/2 inches. SHIPPING 60$ From and internet article: James Adger became one of the wealthiest and most influential merchants of antebellum Charleston. He entered business as a cotton buyer shortly after his arrival in the city, forming the firm of Bones & Adger in partnership with his kinsman Samuel Bones, and then established the hardware firm of James Adger & Company. In 1818 Adger had the good fortune to make the acquaintance of Alexander Brown of Baltimore, who, together with his sons, oversaw one of the largest mercantile and merchant banking operations in the United States. Adger became the Charleston agent of Brown, a connection that became the primary foundation of Adger’s subsequent fortune. Concentrating his varied business activities on East Bay Street, Adger formed a commission and factorage partnership with James Black to create the firm of Adger & Black and then purchased his own wharf. By 1850 Adger held at least $200,000 in real estate and was considered the wealthiest merchant in Charleston. To purchase this firearm simply send me a message via GI with your contact info.
