Description:
This is a nice example of many rifles made in the Southern State right before and after the Civil War. This rifle is 38 caliber and is in shootable condition. The lock and triggers function very well and the rifling is strong, the bore is dark but not heavely rusted. There has been some wood replaced on the forearm and you can see where some cracks have been glued. I believe the lock to be a replacement but I think that this lock was used with the rifle for a considerable time. The ram rod is old and has been with the rifle a long time. There is one Silver Rising Sun inlay on the right side of the butt stock, the side plate is made of copper which is not uncommon on southern rifle. This rifle has resided in Alabama with one family for many years, so it may be an Alabama made rifle. The barrel appears to be hand forged and in its original length of 40.25". The nose cap, thimbles, trigger guard, butt plate all appear to be original to the rifle. The stock is nice curly maple or tiger stripped as some would call it. This rifle would make a nice over the mantel piece, or shooter or just a nice addition to one's collection.
