Description: Rare American Revolutionary War Maryland Committee of Safety Attributed Johann Jakob Behr Flintlock Heavy Dragoon Cavalry Pistol, .69 cal smoothbore, mfg. circa 1720-1740. Author Daniel Hartzler attributes Johann Jakob Behr, or John Jacob Behr, as being a gun maker from Frederick County, Maryland to the Committee of Safety during the American Revolution as several Maryland branded muskets and pistols exist which bear his name. While there is an undeniable connection between Behr and Maryland assembled arms the truth is Behr was a Dutch gunmaker that lived between 1690-1740 and the more likely explanation is that Maryland must have received a small cache of his weapons - old by the time of the Revolution, which were rebuilt by an unknown maker for the Committee of Safety. To quote Hartzler: "John Jacob Behr was a gunsmith in Frederick County making muskets, bearing the name "JJ Behr" and "Maryland". Also surviving are two wall guns and four pistols. Behr's pistols are in two forms and are extremely long". The pistol offered here is a massive Heavy Dragoon horseman's pistol marked with Behr's name which appears to have been rebuilt during the 18th century and very well may have been assembled for the Maryland Committee of Safety. The pistol measures 20 1/2" long overall and features a 13 11/16" barrel which starts as octagon transitioning to round with two wedding band turnings and retaining it's original brass blade front sight. The lock is marked "I I BEHR" and remains totally original and unaltered with all original components. The metal has a finely textured silver/gray appearance overall. The walnut stock features deep relief carving around the lock, barrel tang, and ramrod channel and is likely not the original stock from 1730 but presumably American made during the time of the Revolution. The wood has an attractive moderately worn appearance with a coat of varnish added long ago and shows no cracks, chips, or repairs. Original Dutch brass buttcap, triggerguard, serpentine sideplate, and ramrod pipes with crude American made wrist escutcheon and simple brass band nosecap. Lovely original forged rattail trigger and brass button capped wood ramrod. The action is crisp and secure and functions flawlessly with a very strong mainspring. The frizzen does not engage the feather spring and the base of the frizzen is bent slightly causing it to not shut tight against the pan as it should. A fantastic and impressively large American attributed horse pistol that will make a choice addition to any collection.
