Description: The Winchester Model 70 has been a staple of American hunting and target competition since its introduction in 1936. In 1963 a few changes were made to the design, and the first of the newer rifles were produced in 1964. This led to the terms “pre-64” and “post-64”. While there has been much debate over the years about which version is “better”, the fact remains that both are excellent rifles in their own right. In fact, the Model 70, in any variation, is well known for its accuracy and quality. This particular example is a Model 70 Carbine Short-Action. The rifle is in good condition though it does have some wear. It has most likely been used on more than a few deer hunts over the years. The butt pad is just beginning to form cracks at the rear due to age. The wood stock itself possesses the usual handling wear, with very shallow dents, but is free of cracks or anything that would compromise the safety of the rifle. The bluing is mostly intact and is at around 95 percent condition. The barrel exhibits a few light scratches and just a small amount of finish wear at the edges of the muzzle. The bore is in superb shape and should provide a high level of accuracy. The magazine holds the traditional 5 rounds, which is actually superior to modern, fixed-magazine bolt action rifles which usually hold a mere 4 rounds. The rifle is set up with a decent pair of rings. With a proper scope, this Model 70 could fill a variety of roles, seeing as it is chambered for the legendary .243 Winchester. The .243 was originally developed as a versatile short action cartridge to hunt both medium game and small game alike. Upon its initial release back in 1955, the .243 quickly took whitetail hunting by storm, and it remains one of the most popular whitetail deer cartridges. The .243 is well-known worldwide for its low recoil and superb ballistics, both of which contribute to its multi game capabilities. With the proper bullets, the .243 can be used to take anything from small varmints all the way up to mule deer. It has also been used for tactical applications in the past, having been used by the LAPD’s SWAT unit during its early years. There is a very wide range of bullets available for the .243, running from the Hornady 58 gr V-Max all the way up to David Tubb’s 115 gr D-TAC. Bear in mind, the standard Winchester twist rate for the Model 70 is 1:10 inches, which is intended for use with bullets up to 100 gr in weight.
