Description:
Starting out as a Smith & Wesson Chiefs special or Chiefs Airweight, it was introduced in 1950 and was soon redesigned into the Bodyguard airweight which was an aluminum small J-frame revolver with a shrouded hammer. The Model 49 was the all-carbon-steel-framed version of those predecessor revolvers, featuring a 5-shot cylinder, 1 7/8" barrel, and a weight of 20 ounces. Although its unorthodox design borders on what some might call ugly, the extra weight from its hump-backed frame nestles the Bodyguard solidly in the hand, the semi-concealed hammer is surprisingly easy to cock and, due to its snag-free contours, the gun can be quickly drawn from the pocket. Chambered in .38 S&W special, it was ideal as a lawman's off-duty revolver or for a law-abiding civilian's self-defense gun.
