Description:
Offered for your consideration is this fine 1894 Winchester Sporting Rifle in the rare 38-55 W.C.F. caliber. Made in 1902 it has the desirable 26 inch octagon barrel with a very good bore. The rifling is bright and sharp. I rate the bore 7.5 to 8 on a 1 to 10 scale, unusually good for a rifle from the black powder era. There are small, scattered areas of roughness from black powder use, but nothing that should affect accuracy. The bore slugs out at .376" diameter and the bore is uniform. I didn't detect any loose areas while pushing the slug through, fine for jacketed or cast bullets. The period front sight is marked "Marbles Sheard" with a 1/16" gold bead. The rear sight is a Winchester 24D with thumb stlye elevator. The barrel and magazine have very good blue coverage with sharp edge wear and some mottling on the magazine. The receiver is mechanically excellent - feeds, chambers and ejects crisply and smoothly. There are still traces of the original high polish blue in protected areas as you can see in the photos. It has the forging lines, striations, on the receiver flats, typical of the early 1894 receivers. There are still small traces of case colors remaining on the hammer and lever. The hammer holds properly on half and full cock. The walnut buttstock and forearm have some nice grain, particularly in the buttstock. There are hunting use marks present as shown in the photos. The wood is tight, well and properly fitted, and flush to proud above mating metal surfaces. The buttplate has little finish remaining but is smooth and not pitted. Overall this is an exceptionally nice, early 1894 Winchester in the hard to find 38-55 caliber. It's a handsome rifle with many years of good shooting left in it. I'll be glad to answer any questions you may have and will provide additional photos if you'll specify the exact areas you would like to see. Three day inspection.
