Colt Baby Dragoon, caliber 31 percussion, with 5-shot cylinder, 5" octagon barrel, Type V with ramrod, walnut grips, silver-plated brass back strap and trigger guard, blued and case hardened finish, having the eye-catching square-back trigger guard common to the early 1851 Navy, the early full-size Dragoons, and the Baby Dragoons. Serial number 14274 matches everywhere and puts manufacture in 1850, at the time when the California Gold Rush was booming. Walnut grips show some dings on the bottom but retain a good amount of the original varnish, and the back strap/trigger guard retain about 50% original tarnished/uncleaned silver plate. Frame has mottled nickelly-silver appearance common when case hardening fades. Basically all metal surfaces are a light patina. Sharp markings with barrel having the 2-line New York City address. The action is strong with positive clicks and indexes correctly every time, not something that is common with the surviving Baby Dragoons. All parts are original, right down to the present but worn brass front sight. Traces of cylinder scene remain. Solid collector piece to fill a void in that Colt collection.
