Here for your consideration Is U.S.Model 1868 trapdoor Springfield serial number 6.
Like all of the first ten or so 1868's made, this rifle is a Prototype.
Different in features from the 5 rifles made before it and the 4 rifles made after it.
There are features on this rifle that aren't seen on the design that was finally adopted for production.
The cut out in the wood for the thumb latch to fit down into is a simple cut that runs 90 degrees from all later cuts.
The trigger guard, barrel bands, swivels and springs and front end cap are blued, the cleaning rod is thicker like on an 1866 and so stiffer and is concave on the end like on an 1866 instead of flat, the firing pin is unique as is the breech block.
there is no cleaning rod retaining spoon or a place to put one.
The rear sight is an 1866 type.
The stock is an 1866 stock that was altered by Springfield Armory to create the new 1868 type.
This rifle is literally part of the evolution of the 1868.
I don't think this rifle was issued, but it's been fired a little. Probably during tests.
This rifle is the only single digit 1868 in a private collection or that is up for sale on the planet.
The other two known single digit 1868 rifles are in the Springfield Armory Museum. They are #1 and #8.
#10 was the first rifle to have the Long Range rear sight that was used on all subsequent 1868's. However those first sight leafs on the 1868 dated rifles had different graduations for distance with smaller numbers.
