Description:
JOHN SITES Long Rifle .40 ARROW ROCK MO BOONVILLE Santa Fe PIONEER  Antique

WESTWARD EXPANSION Mid-1800s FULL STOCK Long Rifle

Here we present an antique J. Sites Signed Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century in Arrow Rock, Missouri. John Sites, Sr., was a German immigrant who moved to Boonville, Missouri in 1834 where he owned and operated a gunsmith shop. His son, John Sites, Jr. opened a gunsmith shop very close to his father’s shop in Arrow Rock, Missouri in 1844. At the time, Arrow Rock was an important waypoint on the Santa Fe trail, and was poised to serve the same purpose on the Oregon and California trails. Sites guns have been found in several western locations, including California, Oregon, Montana, and New Mexico. John Sites Jr.’s home and gunshop are still in Arrow Rock and are recognized as “Historical Sites” in this small town nestled in central Missouri right on the Missouri River. John Sites Jr. was born in 1821 and died in 1904. After the American Civil War, he was more of a gunsmith and retailer than a gunmaker.

This rifle has an octagonal barrel in .40 that is nearly 42” long and is signed by hand on the top flat. The stock is full-length. Back action lock with double set triggers. Large brass patchbox in the butt stock. Crescent moon set into the left side cheek piece.

The overall condition is good. Original patina. The action is strong. The bore is untouched with worn rifling. The stock is solid. The patchbox lid does not quite latch and stay closed on its own.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 41-3/4 inches.

Caliber: .40 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
