This is a handsome rifle that retains 97-98% of the original blue on the barrel with some silvering at the muzzle, as well as a smooth plum-brown patina on the balance. A commensurate amount of blue remains on the breechblock and hammer, while the frame has bright original color case-hardening remaining under a thin plum-brown patina. The walnut forend and buttstock are in very good-fine condition, with scattered small handling marks and minor blemishes in the original military oil finish. The action is tight and fully functional, and the original ramrod is still present. This is one of the nicest Whitney-Laidley rifles we have ever seen, most surviving examples having been rather hard used during their service lives. This example is in excellent original condition, and would make a great addition to any collection. Antique SOLD Antique: Yes |
