Early 1800s ENGLISH Flintlock Shotgun
Here we present an antique Wheeler & Son Flintlock Full Stock Fowling Piece, made circa 1820 in Birmingham, England. Robert Wheeler had a shop in London beginning around 1767. The firm was renamed Robert Wheeler & Son in 1813 and remained active until 1830. Wheeler is known to have produced an array of pistols and long guns for government contracts as well as export.
This would have been very handy to carry for the forester or hunter while hunting in the early 1800s in Britain and mainland Europe. This would have been the epitome of a practical European shotgun that would have been used to put food on the table or protect the homestead from unwanted intruders, including both man and beast. With its large bore and long barrel, this piece was built primarily for fowling, upland and waterfowl. Shotguns then, like today, were highly valued for provision, pest control and homestead defense.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape for its age. A few cracks are present along the forend. A few cracks have been repaired, but the split at the muzzle end still shows movement. “WHEELER & SON” is marked on the lock. Legible markings.
