Description:
Absolutely original, untouched and never screwed with Barnett 1856 Cavalry Carbine as supplied to the Confederate armed forces and shipped during the Civil War aboard blockade runners. The proof is the small JS/anchor stamp on the top of the buttstock just forward of the top edge of the brass buttplate. This stamp was specific to this model of carbine as delivered to the South during the war. Clearly visible in the 11th picture of this listing. Barnett was known literally as the "Gunmaker to the Confederacy". A total of approximately 10,000 of these carbines were delivered to the South during the war, this is one of them. According to the owner, it has been in his family for generations, having been picked up off of a battlefield by his great- great grandfather. Caliber is .577.  The swivel ramrod is original and all there, and fully functional. This is rare in and of itself, as it is an intricate mechanism, and many were broken or lost in battle. Obviously the hammer retaining screw is missing, and according to the owner, it has always been that way. That being said, it is fully functional and feels as if the screw is there, as it is tight and does not want to come off. The rear 3 leaf sight is also all there and fully functional. Three X's carved into the butt, 3 Yankee soldiers tallied? As legitimate a Confederate carbine as I have ever held, and it could be yours with a phone call or an email. $100 shipping to the lower 48, 3% surcharge for using a CC. If you choose to pay with a personal check, we will hold the item for up to 10 days to make sure that it clears. Please expedite such pymts as we will hold an item on your word for 5 days.
