The Webley brothers, James and Philip, became gunmakers on the cusp of major change in firearms technology. When Philip joined his older brother James in business in 1835, single shot percussion guns were still the norm, though revolvers were just becoming available. The brothers worked as percussioners and lock makers before making complete guns at Weaman Street in Birmingham. Philip would marry into a gunmaking family and buy the family business. By the 1850s the brothers were making everything from muzzleloading single shot pistols and muskets to pepperboxes, which were early revolvers. In 1853, James Webley patented his famous “long spur” single action revolver, effectively launching the family’s famous company known for their handguns. These pistols feature engraved locks, octagonal barrels in .58 caliber, horn fore end caps on the stocks, captive ramrods, cap traps in the pommels, and nicely checkered grips. The overall condition is very good. Original finish and patina. Nice engravings and clear markings. The actions are excellent. The bores are smooth and patinated. The hammers are bobbed. One pistol’s percussion nipple was broken out long ago. The stocks are solid with nice checkering. “WEBLEY” marked locks with “LONDON” marked barrels. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 5-7/8 inches. Caliber: .58 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
