Here we have a WW1 Imperial German S1898 Quillback Bayonet and Scabbard by maker Carl Eikhorn. These long, slender blades are often called “quillback” or "pipeback" blades, due to the round spine that runs through the blade like the quill of a feather. This bayonet is of the second pattern design since it has the two piece grips (known as the neuer Art = newer model). The slim long impressive blade is in excellent condition and is marked with the ricasso of Carl Eickhorn. The 2 piece wooden grip handles are in outstanding condition exhibiting a few light marks but no cracks or chips. This sword bayonet is for use with the 8 mm Mauser Gewehr 98 made famous during the First World War. Blade length is 20 5/8" and overall is 25 7/8", No regiment marks on either the bayonet or scabbard. This fine piece of German hardware would make an excellent addition to a collection of militaria or a great start to a new collection.
