“OLD RELIABLE” Made in Bridgeport, CT
Here we present a scarce antique Sharps Model 1863 Carbine Converted to .40-70. This military carbine was originally made in the percussion format for the Union war effort during the American Civil War, circa 1863 in Hartford, Connecticut. These were sold as surplus after the war and bought by the famous arms dealer Schuyler, Hartley & Graham of New York. In April of 1879 SH&G sent 500 of these back to Sharps—now in Bridgeport, CT—to be rebarreled for metallic cartridges of smaller calibers (smaller being relative to .50 caliber) for sale to Western hunters. 300 of these were converted to .40-70 with a new barrel (in this case it is marked “Old Reliable” and “SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT CONN”). Percussion primer devices were removed from the lock and filled and machined to delete this antiquated feature. E.C. Meacham out of St. Louis, Missouri converted many of these themselves in a similar manner and had Sharps Bridgeport convert some of these in .40-90.
These went on to experience some of the most exciting times in American history during the Indian Wars, the settling of the Western Frontier, and the connecting of the coasts with the railroad. They would have been affordable, reliable, hard-use guns for the saddle, intended to have better, flatter ballistics for game in the Western Plains and the mountains of the US Frontier.
The overall condition is good. Original finish/patina. The action is excellent. The bore is in good condition with strong rifling. The walnut stock shows much use. There is some period damage to the top left wrist next to the receiver where a chunk is absent; also lots of small, stable splits and chips throughout. There is a replacement screw holding the tail of the lock. This carbine looks the part because it played the part. Here is a rare Old Reliable cartridge conversion from the Western Frontier!
