Description:
This is a very cool and quite scarce Argentine Navy-converted FN Model 1949 semi auto battle rifle chambered in 7.62 NATO caliber with a 20 round detachable magazine. The Fabrique Nationale Model 1949 (often referred to as the FN-49, SAFN, or AFN (automatic rifle version) is an autoloading battle rifle designed by Belgian small arms designer Dieudonné Saive in 1947. It was adopted by the militaries of Argentina, Belgium, the Belgian Congo, Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Indonesia, Luxembourg, and Venezuela. The selective fire version produced for Belgium was known as the AFN. While well regarded for its high build quality and reliability in comparison to the rifles of the time, its marketability was limited, as it was not developed in time for use in World War II but later, as many militaries had already begun the switch to selective fire battle rifles. An unknown number of FN-49s were produced as selective fire automatic rifles, but the small 10 round box magazine limited the usefulness of the fully automatic feature. Contrary to some speculation, FN did not contract or produce the Argentine conversion of SAFN 1949 rifles from 7.65×53mm Argentine to 7.62×51mm NATO. While FN did receive and then later deliver an order for a conversion of a single rifle in March 1967, the remaining armory stock of the Argentine rifles were converted domestically by Metalúrgica Centro in Argentine for the Argentine Navy, a company formerly known as Fábrica de armas Halcón. The 7.62 Nato conversion consisted of Metalúrgica Centro replacing the barrel with a new barrel in 7.62×51mm NATO, modifying the ejector to work with the new cartridge, and modify the the entire triggerguard to work with the new 20 round detachable box magazine. No longer would this rifle be designed to work with 10rd stripper clips loaded into a fixed magazine, but instead use quick and easy detachable 20 round box magazines like most modern military rifles in use around the world. This particular rifle is in good overall condition for a service rifle, complete with excellent mechanics.  It is complete and all-original, and the factory finishes are still intact.  The rifle shows minor wear and handling marks but no bad spots/eyesores or major damage.   Sights are a protected front blade and adjustable rear battle-type, and the stock is made from a tough hardwood.  The bore in this rifle is very good with strong rifling and no pitting visible. This is a very cool FN 49 variation that is very seldom seen here in the States, and the Argentine Navy conversion makes it a much more fun rifle to shoot than the original contract rifles with the quick reloads and increased magazine capacity, cheap and easily found .308 ammunition it is chambered in, and the minimal felt recoil of the rifle in .308 even when firing rapidly.  This Argentine Navy FN 49 should continue to be an excellent long-term investment and also a fun rifle to shoot!
