Striped Maple Full-Length Stock
Here we present an antique James Bown Long Rifle, made circa the 1850s in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Bown was born in England in 1823, immigrating to the Canada at the age of 8. At some point he moved the United States, first in New York before moving to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. He became a gunmaker in Pittsburg and his career spanned 1848 and 1887. His first venture was Bown & Tetley. He then established Enterprise Gun Works, which became one of the biggest Pittsburgh sporting goods dealers. He apparently retired but later established Bown & Son with his son William. Samuel Brown and August Hirth would buy the business and rename it Enterprise Gun & Machine Works. James Bown would continue in gunmaking until about 1898. He passed in 1901.
This rifle features a 36-inch octagonal barrel in .40 caliber in a full-length striped maple stock. The stock has a brass patchbox inset. Double set triggers.
The overall condition is good. The action is functional. The rear (set) trigger does not presently set but the front trigger does drop the hammer just fine. The bore is patinated and nearly smooth. The stock is solid.
