Description: Fine Original Flintlock New England Militia Musket with English Barrel, A.W. Spies Lock, & Bayonet, .71 cal smoothbore, mfg. circa 1820's. This is a wonderful New England militia musket in fantastic condition which remarkably still retains it's rare original bayonet. The gun is 100% original top to bottom and has a lovely unmolested appearance overall. So-called "New England Militia Muskets" evolved as a distinct pattern during the Federal era and served as dual purpose arms that could be used at home and on the battlefield. Most examples were made in Massachusetts. The Birmingham proofed barrel is stamped "LONDON" and measures just over 40" long fitted with a bayonet lug which doubles as the front sight. The engraved lock features a roller frizzen and is marked "A-W-SPIES / WARRANTED" for New York City hardware and military goods retailer Adam W. Spies. It remains in it's original unaltered form with all original components. Likewise the touch hole is original and has never been altered. The metal has a rich dark plum patina overall with superfine freckling scattered down the barrel and a few larger oxidation spots toward the muzzle. The stock features a finely checkered wrist with brass shield escutcheon and retains no less than 80% original varnish which has naturally crazed slightly with age having an attractive untouched appearance and a blackened patina forming around protected areas. The wood is really in fantastic shape for a fullstock musket of this age. There is a tight old 1 1/2" crack just under the escutcheon with very minor sliver loss along the right side of the barrel tang and a 2" crack on the left side of the forearm near the muzzle. The ramrod channel and edges are all sharp and there is little surface marring. Original brass buttplate, sideplate, trigger, triggerguard, ramrod pipes, and nosecap have all turned a much desired near-black patina from having never been polished. Original iron ramrod. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. The hammer is a bit loose only noticeable when cocked. The frizzen smartly snaps shut and springs forward. The bayonet measures 18 3/4" long overall having a 14 3/4" triangular blade which is 1 1/16" wide across the base with "3" stamped on the flat. The surfaces are a bit rougher than the gun yet the patina and color matches accordingly. The bayonet fits perfectly over the muzzle securely locking onto the lug and having the muzzle flush with that of the bayonet as it should. Pictures really don't do this gun justice it has such an honest untouched look and finding one of these with the original bayonet is extremely difficult. A choice representation of a New England Militia Musket. Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique arms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only.
