Description: Excellent Original American Revolutionary War Colonial New England Club Butt Flintlock Infantry Musket, .75 cal smoothbore, mfg. circa 1775-1780. This is a stunning Revolutionary War American musket in fantastic original condition. The club butt style is unique to New England particularly Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Eastern New York with this example likely having been assembled in Massachusetts during the early years of the conflict. It is primarily built around Spanish Model 1757 musket components utilizing it's lock, barrel, sideplate, triggerguard, and buttplate. Spanish Model 1757 muskets were shipped to the colonies by the thousands for the patriot cause with many arriving in Massachusetts as early as 1775 and more brought in through Spanish occupied Louisiana territory later in the war. The barrel measures 42 1/2" long and retains it's original bayonet lug which doubles as a front sight. The lock remains in it's original unaltered form with all original components. Likewise the touch hole is original and unaltered. The metal has an even dark plum/gray patina overall with some light texturing toward the muzzle and some very fine pinprick pitting near the breech. The stock features the iconic traditional New England club butt with a large beavertail motif around the barrel tang and a fine detail line carved the entire length of the forearm just below it's edge. The wood is great condition for a musket of this age and has an absolutely wonderful untouched appearance having a deep reddish color with a thick blackened patina formed around the butt and within protected areas. The forearm is completely original with no splices. There is a curious rectangular slot cut out underneath exposing the ramrod which appears to have been done long ago for some unknown reason. Some typical edge loss around the lock with a tight old crack under the forearm flanking the cutout, a tight 4" crack on the right side of the forearm toward the muzzle, and very minor edge loss on the left side toward the muzzle. Model 1757 brass buttplate (one screw absent), sideplate, and triggerguard which is inscribed with military rack numbers "3 III" on the tang and "N125" on the bow. No provisions for sling swivels in typical American fashion. The ramrod pipes are nicely turned and were probably sourced from an early English gun. Original brass tipped striped wood ramrod. The action is perfectly crisp and functions flawlessly. The frizzen securely shuts and opens with a somewhat weak spring. The gun is light and wonderfully balanced in hand. This is one of the better Revolutionary War American muskets we have offered in some time. The originality and beautifully preserved appearance would be difficult to improve upon.
