SOLD  **  Franz Sodia BEST Quality Double Rifle Drilling – 270 Win. -- 22 Hornet --  20 Ga.  Near Mint

Description:
This Franz Sodia drilling is a rare combination of three different barrels, two rifled in different calibers (.270 Win and .22 Hornet) and one smooth bore (20 gauge, 2 ¾”). It offers the hunter choices at varied game instantly without changing guns. Be it black bear, deer, bighorn sheep, antelope - pheasant, quail, grouse - coyote, fox, prairie dog or whatever… with all three types of ammunition ready at the pull of a trigger: 270 Win / 20 Gauge / 22 Hornet, no game animal can escape. For the collector this weapon is a magnificent example of exceptional workmanship throughout, simply museum quality, and those who know Franz Sodia guns would fully agree.*

It features Boehler Blitz Stahl Special Steel 25 ½” extractor barrels for lighter weight. The 20 gauge barrel is choked Improved Modified. Although built in 1978, these bores are “as new” inside and out. With bead front sight, the manual flip-up leaf rear sight is dovetailed into a sculptured quarter-rib.
The Bohler Antinit steel barrels have a rib extension for a Kersten-style double crossbolt. The beautifully patterned solid rib is interrupted with two claw mount bases for the quick release scope system. Between the bases, the maker’s name is engraved, “Franz Sodia, Ferlach.” The scope is a high-end Zeiss Diavari C 1.5-4.5 x 18 scope made in Germany, a drilling favorite.

With double triggers the front trigger is a set trigger for the rifle barrels.

The break-open action is built with Purdey-style double bite underlugs and a third top lock with a double Kersten cross-bolt. It is bolstered (reinforced) and has cocking indicators. The safety is a Greener type manual safety.  The barrel selector is mounted on backend of the tang in the location a traditional safety usually resides. The top lever is checkered on both faces for either the right or left hand. Unusual for German guns, the maker has built in bushed strikers with locking screws, a true sign of a handmade gun.

The receiver has outstanding arabesque and game scene engraving hand-chiseled by a master engraver with the finest Teutonic leaves and scroll and game animals which would rival anything coming out of Europe. On the right is a scampering buck; on the left, a ten-point bugling buck; and on the underside an Austrian capercaillie (which is Austria’s prize game bird).  These game scenes are surrounded with deep relief and perfectly executed scroll work. The underside is also inscribed, “FRANZ SODIA – FERLOCH.” The Anson & Deeley forearm release is engraved as are all screws.  German engravers rarely sign their work, but for this one, the engraver should have. Just look at the sharp detail and you can see that this is the work of a master engraver.

The intricately engraved blued steel trigger guard carries the serial number, 21924, and extends the lower tang to a point meticulously inlaid in the pistol grip.

The stock is highly figured, rarely seen on German and Austrian drillings. With some fiddleback figure made of walnut from the Caucasian mountains, it has a rich dark brown color with fiddleback and a few black streaks and demonstrates Franz Sodia’s best work: perfect wood to metal fit, shaped with a pistol grip with horn cap with engraved screw and a European cheek piece with shadow line for the right handed shooter. The forearm wood matches extremely well as if cut from the same blank.  Both the stock and forearm are checkered with the very-hard-to-execute, wrap-around fish-scale checkering with tasteful carvings on both sides of the pistol grip. The forearm’s Deeley release is inlaid with tight points at both ends. This is a true work of the gunmaker’s art.

About the finish: The receiver is case-hardened coin finished – sides, top and underside.  All other parts are blue: the barrels, the sights, the top lever, the rifle selector, the safety, triggers, the trigger guard bow, the stock cross bolt, the scope claw mounts and the sling swivels. There is one protruding Purdey action lug finished in blue.  The choice of finishes blend with the barrels contrasting nicely with the other metal parts, which show they were well thought out and make for a very handsome drilling.

The Length of Pull is 14" to the ribbed horn buttplate with engraved screws. Weight is 9 lbs. 1 oz. without the scope.   The Zeiss Diatal 1-4x18 scope is a top-of-the-line German-made scope.  It is bright and clear with a German duplex reticle.  All the parts fit perfectly in an after-market leather case made for it with the maker’s label and an accessory brass oil bottle.

Condition: Near Mint, Never Fired. It is hard to believe this gun was made in 1976… a truly safe queen with no marks in the finish. All three bores are amazingly new.

If built today, the cost would be more than $45,000 from the maker with all these frills and with two rifle barrels to regulate.

*About the Gunmaker:  Franz Sodia, Ferlach Austria, was founded in 1871 by Anton Sodia and has continued as a family-run business since, changing the company name when Anton’s son, Franz, took over after the father’s death in 1935.
In 1981, five years after this drilling was made, the company celebrated its 110-year anniversary with the participation of renowned personalities and dignitaries from business and politics.  In August 1981, the Austrian Minister of Commerce personally awarded the national award to Franz Sodia that allows their company to use the Austrian Coat of Arms in the course of trade, recognizing their products as being produced with national best-quality craftsmanship.  The grandson of Franz Sodia continues the tradition of producing exclusive best grade hunting arms.
